"Ponsemby’s Castle"

By Mark Clark

Directed by Pat Miles, with Jean Crozier

Performed July 2006

Ponsemby’s Castle is a politically incorrect comedy in two acts. It is set in no time in particular, in a forest of three trees. English upper class twit Ponsemby Bay, his twit daughter Rose and their friend Charles are hunting with the gun- toting Vaucluse, Ponsemby’s twit son. There is a handsome Australian lumber jack (Chip Wood) his French offsider (Jacques Lumber), a feminist conservationist (Teresa Green), a few stray natives and a witch but very little plot.

As act two begins there is still no sign of a plot but Ponsemby’s dungeon is full, all the women seem to fancy Chip Wood and Natasha the witch is definitely up to no good (please boo where required).

Ponsemby’s butlers (Scotch and Coke) turn out to be Irish terrorists. There are several surprising twists at the end and that’s it. Plenty of songs, some witty bits, lots of sight gags, a smattering of jokes the kids won’t get, a couple of sing-alongs, plenty of hissing and booing and a denouement which has very little to do with the rest of the play.
