CREATIVE WORKS YOUTH THEATRE
Creative Works Youth Theatre is an exciting and fun school that will enable students to expand their creativity and imagination through drama, as well as develop theatrical skills in a theatre environment.
Sherie Chant and Paula Wilkinson provide tuition. Sherie and Paula are experienced in community theatre in the areas of acting, directing, choreography and teaching.
In 2004
• Sherie wrote and directed “The Way We Were” at Theatre 8.
• Sherie and Paula wrote and directed the youth theatre production “Crossroad” in conjunction with Roadwise.
• Held theatrical/drama workshops with GATEWAY and CROC Festival
• Creative Works students were involved with the productions of Cinderella, Wizard of Oz, Crossroad, The Way We Were, Princess and Nursery Land Fantasia.
• Creative Works was also involved with AMC Pumping Poetry, Arts Extravaganza and the Geraldton Sunshine Festival.
We have been greatly supported by Theatre 8 in Geraldton.
What has “Creative Works” Been up to recently?
Here is the latest from SHERIE CHANT.
Five students from Creative works attended Drama Wild in Kalgoorlie and had a fantastic time. Stacey Newton (Ugly Stepsister, "Petal" in Cinderella) chaperoned them, which was an excellent opportunity for her and also enabled her to write and direct a short comedy piece about the student’s experiences, that was performed on the last night. Well-done Stacey, and good luck with future events.
Congratulations also go to Amber Carrier who auditioned for the Bell Shakespeare Youth Theatre programme and was 1 in 5 people Highly Commended in Australia. Unreal! Amber was actually too young to be accepted into the programme! Look out next year!
The senior students production of "Crossroad" written by Sherie and Paula was a great success
at QPT amphitheatre on Friday October 9th. Roadwise conducted a survey following the show that indicated the audience had picked up a lot of strong messages about speed, drink driving and its consequences. The cast also learnt a great deal from this experience and we hope that this production had a positive influence on all the people involved. The show was definitely not without dramas though. Our crash car needed an understudy as it was towed away the afternoon before the actual performance. Also most unfortunately some people walking by thought that our dress rehearsal was a real accident scene and were very eager to jump in and help out the casualties, much to everyone’s confusion! Click on "Roadwise" to view all the photos! And yes that was us dragging our lumpy sad looking whale down the street for the Iluka Float Parade. It only just made it to the end before failing to pieces! All the children did enjoy dressing up and we didn't even get rained on this year. Much to our surprise and excitement we were actually awarded the encouragement award. A substantial amount that will go towards costumes, makeup and props for Creative Works! Well done all involved.
Some of the Youth Theatre members were then involved in the Artrageous evening in
which they performed a number of poems and songs along a sea theme.Intermediate and senior students were involved with the recent ACDC event "Pumping Poetry". This involved a workshop with Kate Smith, a professional poet, and and a highly successful performance evening at ACDC on the 18th August.
Paula and I have just been involved with the 2004 “Croc Festival Geraldton”.
This was a huge 2 day event involving schools from all over the Central, Midwest
and Southern areas of WA. As part of the visual and performing arts activities
offered we ran improvisation and physical theatre workshops over the two days at
Theatre 8. We alone had about 250 indigenous and non-indigenous students
involved in our workshops that were a lot of fun. We plan to be involved again
next year with the aim to have Creative Works performing along side other
schools at the closing Rock Performance Concert.
So as you can see we have been very busy in the second half of this year! To end our theatrical year the students are working on some one act plays for a parents and friends evening at the end of term. Everyone is welcome to come and see what talented youth are capable of!
