JOURNEY'S END

Set in World War One in the year 1918, we recreated a Bunker and all the paraphernalia that would be found in a front line trench.

The finished article in natural light. The feel of the set with all the authentic props really gave actors a feeling of 'being there'.

The same set with stage lighting to create the claustrophobia of a candle lit bunker.  There are pictures on the wall above the bed from the French magazine La Vie Parisienne.  These were the genuine article from 1918 and would have adorned the trenches of all the allied nations

This picture shows props that were made or acquired authentic to 1918.  On the table a tin of Australian made Apple and Blackberry Jam, a French translation book, circa 1916, an English Times Newspaper March 1918 and a box of Old Gold cigarettes. On the post you can make out an Australian postcard.  The match box was also authentic, but so small the audience would never have known.

Hard Tack biscuits were baked to an authentic recipe provided by the Australian War Memorial.  Again the Glenlivett Whisky bottle label is accurate for the period and there are a range of postcards on the shelf as well as some family photos.  The Australian flag postcard was a popular card sent by loved ones at home to troops in the trenches

The play required a meal to be served but in the event not eaten.  As we had no artificial food a meal was made.  This picture shows a meal in the making.  Made from clay here we have a chicken leg, some carrots, peas, and potatoes.  And below - the finished product.

Make Up effects:

Ryan Arndt played the Colonel.  As can be seen Ryan possesses a very unmilitary haircut.  This sequence of pictures shows the progression from hirsute modern man to Great War senior officer.  In this picture Ryan's very dark hair has been sprayed and his moustache whitened.

Here MJ plaits Ryans hair .  In the background, Tilly Harman, Nic Snell relaxing and Lachlan Adam exiting the dressing room.

All tightly plaited and ready for the wig.

Ready for the stage.  Ryan shares a moment with

Daniel Finlay who played Capt  Hardy.
